Find Your Voice Week 2 Project

For this week's Crafting promt, create a project that tells a story, I combined a few of the challenges into a layout in my Smashbook about my education journey.  I tried to add more than just the who/what/where/when by telling the emotions I was feeling as well as the factors of my decisions.

For this section, I used the writing based prompt, tell a recent story, to talk about my struggle to find the right MSW program for me that also fits into my current place in life.

And I used my journaling from #4 in taking it further about my passion for social justice to write about my future goals of becoming Wonder Woman! ;)

Find Your Voice Week 2 - Taking it to the Next Level

What am I passionate about?

I am passionate about becoming a social worker.  Social work is a practical profession aimed at helping people address their problems and matching them with the resources they need to lead healthy and productive lives.
Beneath this practicality lies a strong value system that can be summarized in two words: social justice. Social justice is the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities. Social workers aim to open the doors of access and opportunity for everyone, particularly those in greatest need

Within the realm of helping those with the greatest need, my biggest passion is helping children to have all of the opportunities they deserve to grow into positive members of society.  I will be starting my internship with Bethany in September.  I will be working with older child adoption.  Every child needs a loving, positive environment to live in.  It's hard to expect a child to grow up to follow their dreams when they don't live in a safe and stable enough environment to foster their dreams of what they want for their futures.  Children are our future!  We as adults in society need to make sure that we are doing what is needed to make it possible for all kids to have their needs met in childhood so they can just be kids!

52 Weeks of Blogging: Week 1

While reading some of the blogs I follow, and then following links from those blogs (and opening Pandora's box to an endless map of blogs!), I came across a new blog challenge: 52 Weeks of Blogging With a Purpose.  I have been trying to get better about blogging because I really do like keeping a journal for myself to go back and look at.  By following along with this challenge, I will have at least one post a week.

Week 1's prompt goes along with the Find Your Voice week 2 lesson...

Who Are You?

Getting started...
Name: Kimberley Poplaski
Age: 31
Hometown: West Michigan
Nicknames: Kim and Kimmy (although you have to be little and cute to get away with calling me Kimmy!)
Birthdate: Jan. 1982
Current location: West Michigan

Favorites...
Color: orange
Books: Bridge to Terabithia, Hunger Games trilogy, and The Help.  I can't think of any other "favorites" because I don't really have any books that I read more than once, so these are some of the books I have read in the last couple years that stand out to me.
Hobby: scrapbooking and photography
Food: crab legs and most things that combine peanut butter and chocolate
Holiday: Christmas.  I love shopping for the perfect gift for my family members and watching them open their presents.  I also love that Christmas brings out the giving of others to those in need.
Music:  I have a pretty eclectic taste in music!  I listen to everything from Pop to Heavy Metal, although I have a hard time with country.

Details...
Best Accomplishment: Going back to school after losing my job, staying in school when I found out I was pregnant, earning my AA, and continuing on for my BSW and maintaining a 3.75 GPA.
Worst Day: Losing my Grandma Lyon
Longest Trip: Driving to the Georgia Mountians
Furthest From Home: Lyon Family cruise to the Caribbean
Smartest Topic: it's a toss up between math and sociology
Funniest Quirk:  I really can't pick just one!

Make sure to follow along with the Find Your Voice workshop and link to where you are sharing in my comments!  I'll be "taking it to the next level later this week!"

Zeke is One!

So, you are going to have to bear with me as I overload you with the cuteness that is my baby Zekey!  After a week of seeing my friends Audrie and Nicole post pictures of her new puppies, I decided that I needed to adopt their brother.  On August 18, 2012 I traveled to visit my friend Casey and pick up the newest member of our family.  I can't believe he is already one!  So, take a trip down memory lane with me...

Zeke's first picture!

Zeke hanging out with his biological siblings, Zoey and Zander! (The Z puppies)

Zeke comes home to meet (and pester) his new adopted big sister, Hexe

He's been a snuggler since the beginning

Zeke thought the crate was just fine as long as he had guests!

 My babies

The dogs like to sneak on the couch to snuggle with Julia because then they don't get in trouble for being on the furniture.

I lucked out by having another dog that puts up with crap from a toddler and loves her despite it!

And here's my baby boy smiling for his birthday treat!

He may be naughty, but I am so happy that I have him.  Hexe is usually happy to have him too! ;)

Each week will be broken down into three prompts: crafting based, writing based and picture based.  You can participate with 1, 2 or all 3 of the prompts or you can decide each week what speaks to you and do that.  Remember: there is no right or wrong way to participate, do what inspires you!

Prompt 1 (crafting based): Create a project that represents you at the beginning of your storytelling journey.  This is a great time to prep a mini-album; or pull together supplies that you love (or have been scared to use).

For this week's crafting prompt I have pulled out a Smashbook that I have been holding onto since October.  I love that there is an eclectic collection of papers in this book, so I can pick a page that already has a pretty design and just add my story or pictures, or I can add my own elements and embellish the page the way I want.  I will use this for the majority of the workshop, but I may also create 12x12 layouts that I will add in with my regular albums I already have started.

Prompt 2 (writing based): Gather up some of your favorite writing supplies and re-visit the prompts on the worksheet.  Expand upon 2-3 of the questions that you'd like to answer most.

I used Wordle to create a collage based on questions 2 of  the worksheet, "Who are you?"

Prompt 3 (picture based): Start taking pictures every day.  Set a goal (5 pictures a day) and reall work at capturing the little details that happen throughout each day.

I have really been making an effort this week to take pictures of the little things in my day.  My focus this week has been to capture the little things that brighten my day.  You can follow my instagram feed (KimL141) and #findyourvoice to see what other participants are taking pictures of this week.  Here are a couple of my week so far:

Only 4 days until the fun begins!

Are you as excited as I am for the start of the Find Your Voice workshop?  Before we begin, I want to share a few things with you to help you get ready.

First off, you will be able to find information, lessons and examples in a few places.  This will make it easy for you to play along and use a social media outlet that you are already comfortable with.  This also means there are ways for you to start using other social media outlets that you have been wanting to try!

Search Instagram using #findyourvoice

But, one of the best ways to make sure that you receive each lesson as soon as they go live it to sign up to have the lessons sent directly to your email!  Go here to sign up.

Second, you can link your blog to the blog link-up and find the blogs of other participants.

Next, make sure you check out the FAQs.  This is one of the best resources to get a good overview of how things will work as well as a suggested supply list.  While there are no required supplies for this workshop and everyone's supply list will differ, I find it helpful to start out with a basic supply kit and then add things as I work.  I will post my supply kit this weekend.

Where will you be sharing your story?  Please add a link in the comments section.
